After approximately four years of construction, Frankfurt Airport officially opened Pier A-Plus, the 800-meter-long western extension of Terminal 1, as scheduled in October 2012. With this expansion, planned and realized by the architects von Gerkan, Marg und Partner (gmp), Germany's largest air traffic hub can now handle approximately 65 million passengers per year.

The new terminal significantly simplifies and accelerates the handling process at Lufthansa's most important hub. It features seven gate positions for long-haul aircraft: four are designed for Airbus A380 double-deck aircraft, while the other three positions are equipped with two passenger boarding bridges each for use by Boeing 747-8 and Airbus A340. Alternatively, for maximum flexibility, 11 short-haul aircraft can be handled simultaneously.
